How I Left It All Behind to Move to LA

Jennifer Logue

After years of dreaming about change, I finally did it—I left Philly, packed up my life, and moved to LA with just three suitcases. In this episode, I share the lessons I learned from letting go of my stuff, closing a chapter with love, and starting fresh in new soil.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, held back by old baggage, or afraid to make a big decision, this episode is for you. I’ll talk about the peace that comes with clarity, why commitment is often less scary than avoidance, and how to honor endings while stepping into new beginnings.

Along the way, I’ll leave you with questions to reflect on in your own life, so you can tap into your creativity, courage, and purpose.

Jennifer Logue:

Hello everyone and welcome back to Creative Space, a podcast where we explore, learn and grow in creativity together. My name is Jennifer Logue and yes, I did take all of August off from the podcast, but it was for a very good reason. I was busy moving across the country. So after my LA experiments, I decided that I did in fact want to move to California. So before I even went back to the East Coast post this like vacation I signed a lease and it was scary but I was all in. I didn't know how I was going to do it all in six weeks, but somehow it worked out. Sometimes you just got to take a leap of faith. So I practiced what I preach people. So I flew back to Philly, sold or gave away everything in my house, made all the necessary repairs on the house, shipped my car over, packed what I could in three suitcases, and here I am in my new space.

Jennifer Logue:

And August yeah, it was, in a word, an unearthing. It was powerful, it tested me and it taught me lessons I'll carry with me in other areas of my life. Now, I haven't mentioned this on social before and I've mentioned it to a few close friends over the years, but I kept having this dream of my feet in the earth, roots growing around my ankles holding me down, and in the dream I had this feeling of stagnation and stuckness and every time I woke up from it I knew I had to free myself from it. Like I knew I needed new soil and LA was that new soil. And I really knew it from day one of my experiment. I really did. I had so much clarity about the decision and we don't always get that in life. So many of our choices can be in that gray area. But this for me, was so clear, like I didn't really have a choice but to go for it. And you'd think that it would cause me so much anxiety with how much effort it would take to coordinate such a big move in such a small amount of time. But once I committed to the decision, I actually had so much peace. For me the anxiety came from avoiding the decision in the first place, from living in that land of one day I'll move to LA, one day I'll try out the West Coast. So once I decided I could finally breathe, you know, I just took a breath. I knew it was going to be messy. I made my list of things to do and I got to work and the clarity of purpose carried me through the mess. The long list of things to do. Like it, just having that purpose, having my eye on where I wanted to go.

Jennifer Logue:

Now I want to pause here so you can have some time to explore these questions for yourself. What decision have you been putting off? Usually there's something that comes to mind. It can be big, it can be small. What is calling you that you're afraid of? Again, it can be big, can be small. Anything that comes to mind. That's a clue. What would happen if you just decided today to take action? You don't need to have all the answers now. Maybe you can go back and journal about it, take some time to yourself to think about it. But having these little check-ins with yourself is so important. It's so easy to get lost in life and just go through the motions. But pay attention, take that time to listen to that still small voice inside of you. I believe all of us are here for a very special purpose and if we all pay attention to what lights us up, to what we're curious about, we'll find our way and we'll be in alignment. Now back to the move.

Jennifer Logue:

The letting go was not easy. I remember sitting in my house the day after I flew back to Philly and everything was in its place and decorated just the way I wanted it, and I thought, oh, did I make the right call? This is going to sound silly, but when I sold my first item, the first item to go was this navy blue filing cabinet and I had spent weeks looking for this thing to have the perfect office set up, and that fearful voice chimed in are you sure you really want to do this? Isn't this a little too extreme? Can't you just vacation in LA? Just go there for a month every year to scratch the itch?

Jennifer Logue:

But I kept coming back to how aligned I felt in LA and that clarity. Again it guided me through the messiness that comes with uprooting yourself from your comfort zone. And, man, my comfort zone was really comfy, so comfy, oh my gosh. But by the time the last piece of furniture was gone, I had no more attachment to the stuff. You know, it's just stuff and a friend in LA had told me you'll bring your style and your energy with you. You're the magic. And she was so right.

Jennifer Logue:

Like I'm sitting here now in my new creative space, which I feel so inspired by, like I. It just lights me up and I'm more focused here, I feel more connected and I'm surrounded by all these amazing creatives and man. I just feel so grateful, my heart is so full. And it's interesting when you're aligned, like when you're on the path. It's incredible how little you actually need to be happy. That's something I'm finding out right now, you know, because I have less space. You know I have less stuff, but I'm so much happier and lighter Closing with love.

Jennifer Logue:

Now, something else I learned through this whole process that I wanted to share with you is that it's really important for us to close old chapters with love. Sure, I was slammed with moving tasks Like it was a lot but I had this spark of inspiration to host a birthday bon voyage party, just a little house de-warming with my friends and family. So everyone came by, we hung out, we ate cake and some even took home a few of my things, and it felt really good to fill my house with love before closing that chapter and to feel so supported by the people I care about back home as I embark on this new chapter. So what lessons can you take from all of this? Well, number one is once you decide, clarity will carry you through. Clarity will carry you through the mess. You know that. Just trust in it, keep your eye on it. Keep your eye on what you want, where you want to go. Number two you are the magic, not the stuff. Like it's just stuff In the moment. It might be hard to give away, but you'll get over it. You will get over it because your purpose is more important than this stuff. And guess what? You will get more stuff.

Jennifer Logue:

And it's funny, like things that I was worried about not having, like that I'll need, just magically appeared like at my place in LA, like I, I was at a beach party and this girl that I just met, wonderful person, she was chatting about how she was moving to Vietnam in a week and she was like I have a whole apartment full of stuff. Like I could you know I can like give you everything you need. She drove to my new house and dropped off all this stuff that I needed to get set up in LA and like it's funny, funny, she had so many things in that I guess apartment care package that were things that I had back home that I couldn't ship with me. It was just funny. It's funny how the universe provides for us. We always have everything we need Something to think about.

Jennifer Logue:

Then number three is just closing chapters with love sets the tone for your next chapter. So I didn't want to end my chapter in Philly with frantic energy, so having that closing party just really put me in a place of love and gratitude and happiness and I think that really set the tone for this new chapter in LA. So if you're going to close a chapter, I think it's really important and it may not be a get-together for you. Maybe it's having a gratitude practice doing some meditation by yourself, maybe it's having a gratitude practice doing some meditation by yourself, maybe it's creating something beautiful, like when you close a chapter, like closing it with love, I think makes all the difference. So, anyway, that's all I have for this episode of Creative Space. My name is Jennifer Logue and I hope this brought you some inspiration for your own creative journey. Until next time.
