Hello everyone and welcome to Creative Space, a podcast where we explore, learn and grow in creativity together. I'm your host, jennifer Logue, and today's episode is all about finding your creative community, a topic that I think so many of us can relate to, and it's actually inspired by an email I got from Alex, a freelance writer in Portland. Here's what Alex wrote Hi, jennifer, I've been struggling to find a community of like-minded creatives. I feel isolated working from home and I'm not sure where to start in finding a group that inspires and supports me. How do I find a creative community that truly resonates? Thanks, alex. First off, thank you, alex, for sharing that. I know it's tough out there, especially when you're working solo, so finding the right group of people can make such a big difference, and I'm really glad you asked this question. This is something I personally struggled with, so I know how hard it can be. Before I give you my thoughts, though, I want to remind you that I'm not a licensed medical professional. This podcast is purely for informational and inspirational purposes only, so please consult a qualified therapist or doctor for any mental health concerns. But back to the issue of working from home and searching for creative community, here are five tips that might help you, alex, and anyone else out there who's listening.
Jennifer Logue:Tip number one start small and local. Okay, so this first tip is to start small and local. Sometimes we overlook what's right in front of us. Check out local bookstores, coffee shops or community centers for flyers about creative meetups or workshops. You might be surprised what's happening right in your neighborhood. Tip number two dive into online communities. If local options are limited, the internet is your best friend. There are amazing creative groups online, whether you're into writing, painting, music or anything else, join a Facebook group, a Reddit community or a forum that feels like a good fit for you. You can connect with people from all over the world who share your passion. And, just in case you're interested, I'll be hosting another free Artist's Way workshop in 2025. Another free Artist's Way workshop in 2025, and that's all done online and you can build great new friendships with creatives remotely from doing that.
Jennifer Logue:Tip number three take a class or workshop. Now, this one is great because it's killing two birds with one stone. You get to learn something new and you get to meet people who are interested in the same thing you are. It could be a weekend workshop, a night class, whatever works for you, and the best part is everyone's there to grow and connect. Just like you, I made so many new friends and reconnected with old ones when I did a directing workshop at Playhouse West last year. So yeah, workshops are amazing for that.
Jennifer Logue:Tip number four volunteer for creative events. This is one of my favorites. Volunteering puts you right in the middle of the action. You get to meet other creatives, see how events are run and give back to the community. Plus, you're surrounded by people who are just as passionate as you are, and that energy is so contagious.
Jennifer Logue:Tip number five create your own group. And hey, if you can't find what you're looking for, why not create it? Start a small meetup, like a weekly writing group at a cafe or a monthly writer happy hour. It doesn't have to be big, and you'd be surprised how many people are looking for the same thing and just need someone to take the initiative. Why can't that someone be you? So, alex, I hope these tips help you on your quest to find a creative community that lights you up. It might take some time and effort, but once you find your people, it's so worth it. And to everyone else listening if you have a question or a topic you'd like me to cover. Shoot me an email at info at jenniferlogecom. I love hearing from you all. All right, that's all I got for today. Keep creating, keep connecting and I'll catch you next time. Thank you.
